If you're going to get lost somewhere, let it be the north point of the ?Devil's Triangle', a remote landmass otherwise known as Bermuda. Located nearly 600 miles east of North Carolina across the Atlantic, the island is an oasis of protected sandy shores, crystal waters and graceful greenery. Historically, this island was a British colony, and whether at a local cricket match or sipping pints in the pub, the ancestry shows ? though don't get so caught up in cricket that you miss the vibrant cultural mix that makes Bermuda so popular to European travelers. A colorful parade of gaily painted buildings warm Bermuda's big city, Hamilton, where sun and sea meet supermarkets and office hours. Only a mile from shore to shore at the widest point, Bermuda is the sort of place where you can watch the sun rise and set just by turning your lounge chair after a long day of shopping, golf, fishing, snorkeling and dolphins.
Once out of town, bright white sand melds slides into the froth of warm sea. Whether you're here for creature comforts, seeking solitude or after adventure, Bermuda isn't a bad place to dig in.
Take a Bermuda-style watercraft safari and shoot out across the Atlantic for views back to the shore, or rent a Sunfish and sail away into the warm sub-tropical breeze. Pop your head underwater at popular Church or Tobacco Bay before heading out to explore some of the shipwrecks ? 38 in number - around the island. Guided tours zip you out on water scooters to some of the offshore sites swarming with fish and rusting starboards ? try night snorkeling to catch sea creatures after hours. Dive with dolphins or take in some of the spectacular offshore snorkeling accessible by boat ? just don't forget to chart your coral reefs and sand banks if you're steaming under your own sail.
Whether you've got a fly to tie or just want to reel in deep-sea fish, daily charters ply the waters around Bermuda. Brilliant blue seas swirl around Tuna, Wahoo, Marlin, and men overboard ? just there for the catching. Anglers with wobbly sea legs can try for coastal fish from the steady docks in Hamilton Harbor or along the North Shore. Not surprisingly, the island boasts a superb seafood selection for those who just want to sample the day's catch.
Wander the trails of South Shore Park, a preserve that offers a handful of beaches in shapes and sizes to suit most visitors. Take your pick, from tiny to pink, and when the swell is up, body surf for a break from the comfortable sandy rut of a beach chair existence. Golfers can tee off at one of the ten local courses; here in Bermuda though, balls have been known to disappear into the triangle between water hazard (too many mixed drinks), sand trap (soft warm beaches) and green (is a return to office hours really necessary?), so stand forewarned.
