Mission Espada (Mission San Francisco de la Espada) was, in fact, the first mission in Texas, established in 1690. It would move from its original site (near today’s Weches, Texas) to San Antonio in 1731. Today, you can see the irrigation system used by the friars to green the fields (which still works today), as well as the unique entrance to the mission.
